Mixing It Up

A not so subtle play on words here that was started a couple of themes back!

The Queen of Super-Clean

That is Esther Williams (The Queen of Swimming!) cut from a 1950s ad for Cole Swim Suits and the cleaning implements are from Dover clip-art books.  I had cut out the words SUPER-CLEAN quite some time ago, intending it for an Artist Trading Card.

Theme of the Week: Household Duties

We all know them, some love them - some hate them: Household Duties!
Cleaning the house, dusting, hoovering, window cleaning, shopping, cooking, doing the laundry, ironing ...... it never ends!
Show us your favorite or the most hated one, or create a new duty or an alternative way to do them or or or .....
Have fun!

The Emett Express

Another Emett inspired collage.

The Emett Special

My homage to Rowland Emett whose marvelous machines we saw last week in Birmingham at the Gas Hall.

The Modern Way To Make Babies

This was the very first collab Lynn and I did - and it fits to the theme - although it´s from the archives.

Theme of the Week: Machine

It´s Thursday and her is the new theme of the week: Machine
"A machine is a tool containing one or more parts that uses energy to perform an intended action." This is what Wikipedia is saying.
Construct a tool which produces or transforms something - for example a vehicle, an electronic system, a computer .......

Hey B.C.

A

Guess I chose the letter A because my name begins with it!  I am also a dollmaker (cloth) and I thought I would pay homage to that as well.  (The doll figure had boring black sleeves and I found a pattern in a book that kind of looked like a series of repetitive letter A's.)

This is one from the archives - just to come in the letters- groove!

Theme of the Week: Letters

Theme of the week: Letters
A while ago I worked on this theme and it was much fun. So I hope you like it, too. Use some letters in your work - from A - Z - so many possibilities. Have fun - hopefully!

Ripples

One last little portrait for this week's theme, and then I'm outta here.  Will be gone for a couple weeks, back for a bit in September, so will see you then.  And, I hope you all have a perfectly lovely late August!

for barbara, on her 90th birthday

If this one seems a bit different from my usual style, that's because it's a collaboration with my 14-yr-old great-niece, Grace d'Eustachio, whom I've been teaching a bit about collage. We made this together as a portrait, and a gift, for my mother-in-law, Barbara (Grace's great-grandmother), whose 90th birthday is coming up soon. Barbara's hair turned mostly white in her 50s, and has gone by the name of White Owl in pagan circles for many years. She's an avid hiker, and walked most of the Appalachian Trail in her 60s and 70s. So Grace and I chose together to portray her as a white owl in hiking boots, with blue eyes like hers.

The eyes are from Modigliani's "Girl with Braids." I used markers to draw the legs and the details on the face, but the rest is collage. The face itself, incidentally, is from a photograph of falling snow.

We have kittens! I'll come up with a link to a photo in a future posting.

A Portrait of a Boy and his Dog, both Clairvoyant (one of them has even Xray-eyes)

One from my archive...
Had my family over this week for the holidays so didn't have time to create something new, but I
 love the theme!
Saw many wonderful portraits this week on KK!

Portrait of an Elusive Sea Nymph

The background, a page from Life's Nature Library on Animal Behavior was sitting on my work table.  Last night I went through some sheet music and found a piece called "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" dating from 1918 and I just knew she would work amazingly well as a sea nymph!  Illustrated with a spray of roses and bubbles around her head I decided to just keep a couple of roses near her cheek!

Cat Lady

Don't we all know one?  I know a few!  Cat eyes and nose pasted down on a real (vintage) photo hence the soft focus of the background.

Cracked Actor II

Portrait of a Wanna Be Botanist

I'm sorry.  No time to create. But trying to make a new portrait for this excellent theme.  One from the archives, 2009 to be exact, made for a Flickr friend.  Back when I was rubber stamping a lot.  Maybe I'll start to do that again!  (This way I can incorporate my title into the piece.)

Woman

I've been working on a couple different versions of this lady with her her new hands and ferret...one has just gone into an altered book project, and yesterday I decided to do this version all muddled up with watercolor pencils, butterflies and rude lettering ("mother, daughter, wife, whore").

Flowers For The Lady

Medieval Man

Mr & Mrs. Collector

This was too large for the scanner hence the dodgy photo with reflections. Really it was for the theme before but it's taken me this long to finish it. Still, it seems to fit the portrait theme being a double portrait of sorts.

Theme of the week: Portrait

Dear friends,
thanks for letting me choose the themes for us in August! This is a real challenge and very exciting for me!

First theme I would like to suggest is "Portrait".

I´m always interested in the faces / facial expression and the artistic way to show its expression, the personality and the mood of a person. I´m curious which portraits we are going to create this week - of humans or animals or ....??? ...
So - let´s all grab our scissors and be creative.
Have fun and take care!

Dirty Ol' Nose

I made this today from an old "Do It Yourself" magazine cover I've had knocking around for a while. You may spot some of the other parts from famous paintings and the infamous Time Life book about the natural world.
