A Shell of Her Former Self

Diagram of muscular system from a book on anatomy.  Shells from a child's book of sea shells.  That's the French Riveria!  An Eden for this "she shell".

Theme of the Week: Artificial Humans

Something artificial with human attitudes and traits - a subject of our hopes and fears - an androide - an homunculus ....  What ever pops into your mind thinking of "Artificial Humans".

Beauty and the Beast

Breck girl illustration (from advertisement in a 1950s hair salon magazine) and a clay mask of a beast-like man -- I cut away a huge portion of it eliminating the long beard which would have covered Beauty's lovely neck and pearls.  I liked the tension between the two elements.  I added the telephone wire behind to create a feeling of further tension (thanks to a 1950s Western Electric magazine).

Trick Or Treat?

A bit early I know but I couldn't see this as being anything else!

this collage could not possibly be as ugly as the soul of jeff koons

When this week's theme was announced, two words immediately leapt into my mind: "Jeff Koons." Right after that, I knew what the title of my collage had to be. For a long time I have been infuriated by Koons's willful ugllness—not just in his art, but in his whole life, for he himself says they are one and the same. The huge show devoted to him at the Whitney, with both the laudatory and the vituperative things people are saying, has made me quite miserable. It's not my usual style to be so deeply annoyed by someone I have never met—not at all. Well...except maybe Dick Cheney.

Everything in this collage is either from a photograph of Koons's art, from something said in the press about him, or from one of his many advertisements in the media for himself. (One of his ads is the source of the "Exploit the Masses" and "Banality as Saviour" phrases, written on a blackboard in front of little kids.) To be fair to Koons, as much as I can be, I included a photo of his play-doh sculpture, complete with plinth and favorable press remark, without cutting it up in any way.

I'll be curious to hear whether y'all think Koons's work is ugly, or whether Koons is ugly on the inside. I already know my collage is hideous! =laugh=

Theme of the week: Ugliness

Most of the time I try to create an aesthetic collage, using "beautiful" images, pleasing to the eyes. But at least it´s interesting to find out, how much ugliness can stand an image?  Can change a lot of beauty something ugly in something attractive? Is ugliness in the eye of the beholder?
Use some "ugly" snippets this week.
(I´m already keen on our comments: "OMG! What an ugly collage you have done! Congrats!")

On Foot I Had To Cross the Solar System

On foot

I had to cross the solar system
before I found the first thread of my red dress.
I sense myself already.
Somewhere in space hangs my heart,
shaking in the void, streaming sparks
into other intemperate hearts.

--Edith Sodergran (1892 - 1923)

Alphabet Poem

This is a cut up poem I made a few months back for Roger Stevens who was putting together a nonsense book of verse. Not sure what happened to that project. Another on the back burner. Anyway, I had fun making this. The scanner snipped the T off the end of start!

animals see, people see

This is an attempt at illustrating the opening lines of Rainer Maria Rilke's long poem, "The Eighth Elegy." After Stephen Mitchell's translation into English is the original German.

With all its eyes the natural world looks out
into the Open. Only our eyes are turned
backward, and surround plant, animal, child
like traps, as they emerge into their freedom.
We know what is really out there only from
the animal's gaze; for we take the very young
child and force it around, so that it sees
objects—not the Open, which is so
deep in animals' faces. Free from death.
We, only, can see death; the free animal
has its decline in back of it, forever,
and God in front, and when it moves, it moves
already in eternity, like a fountain.

Only you, Gudrun!

"Only you, Gudrun!" is in German "Nur du, Gudrun!"
and was a headline from an article about palindromes.

Sea of Love

Do you remember when we met?
That's the day I knew you were my pet
I wanna tell you how much I love you

Come with me, my love, to the sea
The sea of love
I wanna tell you just how much I love you
Come with me to the sea of love...

The blonde is from a vintage Breck Shampoo advertisement.  The dudes are courtesy of a work by Paul Cadmus entitled "Bathers" circa 1939.  Don't remember where I obtained the full page seascape.

Theme of the Week: Illustration of ....

Hi friends,
during September I will be pretty busy and probably not able to produce collages. But to take part in our group I asked Michael to go ahead picking themes for us.
This week´s theme: Illustration of ..... your favorite song, a phrase, a movie, a poem ... what ever you like to illustrate.

endless months

I can't help it: some of my collages are very personal. This one sums up my late spring and summer of 2014.

It was all worthwhile, though. It was for our new kittens, who are wonderful. =smile=
