Faces

Another one under the wire.  I kept meaning to do a circle-themed piece, but also kept putting it off. (I'm sure I'm the only one who ever does this.)  Finally made an attempt at a 3-D piece yesterday.  It's got circles...and collage...and meaningless text...and here it is.

speech bubbles

Slipping this new one under the wire... The small bubbles in the central current come from The Great Women Cartoonists by Trina Robbins. They're in chronological order from 1902 in lower left to 2001 at upper right. The rest of the bubbles are just... from everywhere.

For the comix geeks among you (and more power to you!), there is one item that's technically not a speech bubble, but text on a flash panel.

Johnny Catalog

This was actually made for another project but it has a circle in it so no harm in adding it here.

Pang-pang...BWOOM!

try again, fail better

Angie's already seen this one: in fact, she's got it. I sent it to her early in our intermittent postcard correspondence. (By the way, thanks for the great Hallowe'en card, Ange!)

Samuel Beckett provides the title. The full quotation, I believe from Molloy, is: "Try. Fail. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." "Failing better" is a concept I often think about when I'm making collages, since I'm a retired doctor who's never had an art class.

I would very much like to make a new one for this theme, but my energy is flagging. Maybe Wednesday morning?

it´s waiting for you

In a way it looks like an illustration for a children ´s book.
But what kind of kid´s book should this be?!

two targets, one arrow

I just got back from two weeks at our "farm" (really a nature preserve) in the mountains of south-central Pennsylvania. I now have an auxiliary studio there for making backgrounds for larger pieces (mostly 11" x 17") on fiberboard. It's exciting! Sorry I've beem AWOL from the KK, but I'll try to find time to make a piece for this week's theme.

In the meantime, here's a link to a truly ancient collage—from 2010, when I was first making collages on book mailers—with circles on it. I have no idea where in my files this piece is located, so I can't upload it directly.

Papa and Michele Enjoyed Stepping Out On A Sunday Afternoon

Background color plate from a vintage Paris travel guide.  Michele was found in a 1960s department store catalogue.  Papa is a found photograph.  I added the hanging light to compliment the street lamps.

The Singer, Not the Song

Chair Series (The Singer, Not the Song)

An old one for me, too.  This was part of a little furniture catalog series I did in 2012, and it later appeared as an illustration in a wonderful, glossy German opera magazine.

Musical Madness

Here's one from the archive - from way back at the start of my mail art activity in the early 80's. This A4 sheet got photo copied and sent out with letters written on the back. Still one of my favourites from that time. Brings back some happy memories!

Theme of the Week - MUSIC

Sorry for the delay and thanks to Angie for reminding me how lax I am sometimes! Musical notes or musical instruments etc. Have fun!

Strong Yet Delicate

So I learned a new word...GUERIDON.  That is the name of the table this woman is sitting on.  As Wikipedia states:

A guéridon is a small, often circular-top, table supported by one or more columns, or sculptural human or mythological figures. This kind of furniture originated in France towards the middle of the 17th century. The supports for early guéridons were often modeled on African, ancient Egyptian or ancient Greek human figures (inspired by caryatids).

This particular gueridon is from a vintage book of French furniture which states this piece is "Epoque De Louis XIV".

Autumn Almanac by The Kinks

Autumn Almanac

Written by: Ray Davies

From the dew-soaked hedge creeps a crawly caterpillar,
When the dawn begins to crack.
It's all part of my autumn almanac.
Breeze blows leaves of a musty-coloured yellow,
So I sweep them in my sack.
Yes, yes, yes, it's my autumn almanac.

Friday evenings, people get together,
Hiding from the weather.
Tea and toasted, buttered currant buns
Can't compensate for lack of sun,
Because the summer's all gone.

La-la-la-la...
Oh, my poor rheumatic back
Yes, yes, yes, it's my autumn almanac.
La-la-la-la...
Oh, my autumn almanac
Yes, yes, yes, it's my autumn almanac.

I like my football on a Saturday,
Roast beef on Sundays, all right.
I go to Blackpool for my holidays,
Sit in the open sunlight.

This is my street, and I'm never gonna to leave it,
And I'm always gonna to stay here
If I live to be ninety-nine,
'Cause all the people I meet
Seem to come from my street
And I can't get away,
Because it's calling me, (come on home)
Hear it calling me, (come on home)

La-la-la-la...
Oh, my autumn Armagnac
Yes, yes, yes, it's my autumn almanac.
La-la-la-la...
Oh, my autumn almanac
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

Bop-bop-bopm-bop-bop, whoa!
Bop-bop-bopm-bop-bop, whoa!
(etc.)

Myrna Loy's Tears Fell Like Shards of Jade

Sometimes I like to get all my collage elements for a specific collage from one source.  Today I picked up The Magazine Antiques and found that swell black and white photo of Myrna Loy (note her spectacular star sapphire ring).  Another page featured an ad for beautiful antique jade and diamond jewelry.  Finally I found the gold angel in another advertisement.  Voila!

The Fall

This is a very quickly made 5 minute collage, small 5 x 3 inches.
I'm making these collages as business cards and it is a nice exercise to make them without having the time to think.
It also fits in the previous collage of Fi's Beatles song 'I've seen a face' ;))

Theme of the Week - AUTUMN ( The Fall )

Interpret this in any way you like - could be falling leaves or falling hair. The season of mellow fruitfulness or the Indian Summer. Have fun!

Automaton Trio

I've really enjoyed this months theme - all of them infact. I'm quite happy to take back the theme picking task for October but if anybody else would like to have a go please leave a comment or message me. Cheers!
